Dogs are often celebrated for their loyalty and ability to sense when their owners need help, even if it means facing danger themselves.
This devotion was undeniably shown by Eva, a young Belgian Malinois owned by Erin Wilson from Trinity County, California. During a peaceful walk by the river, their day took a dramatic turn when a mountain lion suddenly attacked Erin.
As reported by the Sacramento Bee, the mountain lion leapt at Erin, shredding her jacket with its claws. With no one else around, Erin called out for Eva, who fearlessly came to her side.
Eva bravely confronted the wild animal, managing to hit the cougar hard and momentarily redirect its focus away from Erin. Unfortunately, the mountain lion proved formidable and latched onto Eva’s head, causing the dog intense pain.
In a courageous effort to save her beloved pet, Erin fought back against the mountain lion using sticks and stones, eventually receiving the assistance of a passing driver who managed to ward off the animal with pepper spray.
Despite the severity of her injuries, Eva was rushed to the hospital and survived the ordeal.
Erin took to GoFundMe to seek support for Eva’s medical bills, sharing that her courageous companion is on the path to recovery with veterinarians hopeful about her condition.
“She’s not entirely out of danger yet; she’s under heavy sedation until it’s clear the pressure in her skull has decreased,” Erin updated followers.
“She has two skull fractures, a punctured sinus cavity, and noticeable swelling around her left eye, impacting her vision.”
Despite the ordeal and the severe injuries she sustained, Eva’s actions undoubtedly saved Erin’s life.
Captain Patrick Foy from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife commented, “It’s safe to say the dog definitely saved her life.”
Erin’s gratitude shines through her words on GoFundMe, “My dog is my hero, and I owe her my life.”
