Rescuers recently found a pit bull mix abandoned in the woods, resting on a pile of twigs and leaves. The dog was in poor condition, shivering from the cold and severely malnourished. Her life was at risk until she was saved just in the nick of time.
The rescue mission was led by the World Animal Awareness Society, with Cathy Gray being one of the key volunteers in this mission. She approached the frightened dog gently, offering treats as a gesture of goodwill and reassurance.

Upon closer inspection, it was clear that the dog was suffering, covered in sores and scabs. Only then did the rescuers realize that despite the dog’s size, she was still a puppy, as she was in the process of growing her adult teeth.
For further help, the team contacted the Michigan Humane Society. They easily placed a leash on the dog, who seemed relieved to be getting rescued.
At the facility, a thorough examination revealed that she was approximately six months old and suffering from internal parasites along with a secondary skin infection, both of which were treated successfully.

Initially, the exhausted pup, named Penelope, mostly slept as she recuperated from her ordeal. As she healed, her lively and friendly personality began to shine through.
After a month of recovery, Penelope moved to a unique program run by Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan. This initiative, based in a prison, pairs dogs from shelters with inmates for training and care.
The intensive rehabilitation prepared Penelope for a three-month training program at Florence Crane Lakeland Correctional Institution.

During her time there, she learned basic commands and a variety of tricks, making her ready for adoption by the end of the program.
Penelope, affectionately called Penny, excelled in the prison training program. Her transformation was complete when the Falzone family, who fell for Penny after seeing a video on Facebook, decided to adopt her.

To their delight, they also adopted Penny’s buddy, Barkley.
Penny’s journey was long and challenging, but it finally brought her to a loving home where she can enjoy life as a cherished companion. You can catch a glimpse of her transformation and new life in the video below.
