Cupid watched from the porch as his family packed their belongings, loaded up their car, and drove away, leaving him behind. Confused and unsure why he wasn’t included, Cupid remained, hopeful that they would come back for him someday.
Concerned neighbors in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, noticed Cupid lingering on the porch without his owners and reached out to Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue.
“I’ve been informed that his owners moved and left him,” Guido told The Dodo. When Guido inquired with others about the dog, they simply confirmed, “They moved.”
Guido soon found Cupid rummaging through a dumpster for food. As she tried to approach him, he quickly retreated to the safety of his former home, scratching at the door in a desperate bid for entry.
Watching Cupid’s forlorn attempts deeply touched Guido.
Despite her efforts, Cupid was initially too nervous to accept food from Guido. After pursuing him for half an hour through a nearby alley, Guido finally managed to earn his trust by softly reassuring him.
“It might sound odd, but it was as if he understood me,” said Guido. “He calmly came over, sat down, and let me put a leash on him.”
As they journeyed back to the rescue center, Guido continued speaking to Cupid, perhaps sensing that he needed comfort. Since his arrival at Speranza Animal Rescue, Cupid has slowly but surely adapted to his new surroundings.
“He’s been an absolute gentleman since he got here,” shared Guido. “Although he seems to be a little perplexed, he’s clearly delighted to be around people, wagging his tail at everyone.”
Once Cupid completes his health check-ups, he’ll be ready to search for a new family. Guido is confident that finding Cupid a forever home won’t be difficult. “He’s such a sweet dog,” she said.
Despite what he’s been through, Cupid’s loyalty remains unshaken, and he’s ready to patiently wait for a family who will appreciate the devoted companion he already is.
