Stray Rescue of St. Louis has been a cornerstone of animal rescue in Missouri for more than 20 years, dedicating itself to saving dogs that might otherwise be overlooked. The organization offers a much-needed second chance to dogs that are abandoned, injured, or otherwise in need.
Donna Lochmann, a longtime member of the team, has been a key figure in these rescue efforts, always at the forefront of challenging situations. Some of these rescues, however, are especially heart-wrenching.

One day, during her routine drive through the streets of St. Louis, Donna noticed a distressed female dog. The dog was dirty, clearly nursing, and seemed to have recently given birth. Eager to help, Donna put out some food, hoping the gratitude of a full belly might lead the dog back to her pups.
“As soon as she finished eating, she started to move through yards and streets, eventually disappearing into a thick, brushy area,” Donna explained.
Following the mother dog into the bushes, Donna heard a frantic puppy cry. The sound led her to a helpless six-week-old puppy that had fallen into a deep pipe. The terrified pup whimpered for help, but once safely in Donna’s vehicle, the pup’s tail wagged non-stop with relief.

The mama dog continued barking, leading Donna deeper into the woods. In her search, Donna discovered two more puppies, though capturing them was no easy feat.
“I managed to get one puppy to the jeep and hurried back for another,” Donna recalled. With all four puppies safe, Donna turned her attention to the mother.
Back in the neglected area, Donna found more than she expected. Another adult female dog was hiding beside the mama dog. Donna wasn’t sure if they were siblings or if the second dog was an offspring from an earlier litter.

“Catching the two adult dogs was tough,” Donna admitted. “Our traps didn’t work, and it was getting late, so we had to call it a day.”
After a restless night, Donna returned to a more successful outcome. She captured one adult dog with the help of food, but as they drove away, the remaining dog watched forlornly from a nearby field.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Donna. “We had to leave her but were determined to try again the next day.”

Unfortunately, the mama dog was uninterested in food and refused to enter the trap, necessitating a different approach. The rescuers used a blanket and pee pads from the puppies’ foster home to lure her, along with a recording of her pup’s cries from the pipe.
Their strategy worked. The following morning, the mama dog was calmly lying in the trap, allowing Donna and the team to safely transport her to their facility.

Finally, after days of determined effort, the entire dog family was secure and safe. Donna expressed her relief: “They will receive all the love in the world and find their places in loving families.”
Stray Rescue of St. Louis remains committed to transforming the lives of dogs in need, one rescue at a time.
