While driving through a forested area in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tow truck driver named Andrew noticed something unusual that prompted him to stop. Amidst the sticks and mud, he spotted the face of a small, frightened brown dog.

Curious and concerned, Andrew decided to take action. He quickly snapped a photo of the dog and shared it on Facebook, hoping someone would recognize the lost animal. He also sent the picture to Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne (LDFW), a network that helps reunite missing pets with their families.

Inspired by the photo, the owner of LDFW, along with another dog enthusiast, set out to find the scared pup. Their search party grew to include four more compassionate individuals, all eager to rescue the dog from his plight. It wasn’t long before they located the dog across a creek, safely capturing him and taking him to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control (FWACC).

At the shelter, the dog received much-needed medical attention and was named Joey. “When we heard of how many people were willing to drop everything they were doing to come rescue Joey, it gave us hope. His rescue is a testimony to how powerful a group of animal lovers can be,” said Delaney Atkinson, FWACC’s community outreach educator.

Although Joey arrived at the shelter feeling a bit sluggish, he quickly perked up when given some toys to play with. The staff watched as Joey enjoyed himself, and over time, his health and confidence blossomed, transforming him into a rejuvenated and spirited dog.

Joey’s journey served as a reminder to FWACC staff that past difficulties don’t define one’s future. His cheerful disposition, despite his challenges, was an inspiration to everyone who met him. Hoping to share Joey’s remarkable story with others, the shelter continued to feature him on their social media.

Soon enough, a woman saw Joey online and felt an immediate connection. Upon meeting him, both she and Joey sensed they were meant to be together. Joey has since found a loving home with her, joining a family that includes another dog and two cats. He now enjoys a life filled with companionship, love, and the happiness he deserves.
