When Kosandra Ramirez, a dedicated member of the rescue group ThisIsHouston, received word of a dog in distress in Cleveland, Texas, she did not hesitate to act. The dog, later named Chief, was found in a dire state, huddled under a mobile home. He was visibly shaking from the cold and so malnourished that every bone was painfully obvious.

Initially, Chief was too frightened to let Ramirez near him, signaling a life likely spent without human kindness. With perseverance, however, she managed to rescue him and hurriedly took him to an emergency veterinary hospital. During the journey, Chief finally succumbed to exhaustion and fell asleep, only to awaken confused about his surroundings.

One alarming night, Chief suffered a seizure, leaving Ramirez deeply worried about his fate. Fortunately, the medical team was able to stabilize him. Further tests indicated he had contracted hepatozoonosis, an uncommon tick-borne disease that is incurable but manageable. Chief started on antibiotics and slowly began to improve.

After a stay of four weeks in the hospital, Chief was ready to leave with Ramirez, who fostered him back to health. As he regained strength, his progress was evident, although he developed a noticeable limp. To address this, Chief underwent a femoral head ostectomy surgery and made a full recovery. Enjoying life with his foster siblings, he learned how to be a happy dog.

Despite starting to trust his foster family, Chief was still reluctant to fully open up. He underwent training to rebuild his confidence, and gradually, under Ramirez’s loving care, he grew more receptive to affection.
