One moment you’re playing with your beloved pet, and the next, they look like something’s wrong. That’s precisely what happened to Susan and Gene Jaworowski when their dog, Bessie Smith, suddenly seemed out of sorts.
The couple initially thought perhaps they had overworked her or that she might have a heart condition. Though the reality was far from what anyone expected.

It was a beautiful day as Gene and Susan enjoyed a trip to the lake near their Fort Collins, Colorado home with their dog Bessie Smith. Now, it’s not the Bessie Smith the famous jazz singer, but rather their lively Border Collie mix, born from a purebred mother and a mystery father. Named along with her littermates after well-known jazz musicians, Bessie was adopted from Bounce Animal Rescue Fort Collins several years ago.
At just six weeks old when the Jaworowskis took her in, Bessie grew into a vibrant, active dog, showcasing the typical energy and zest for life found in Border Collies. The couple delighted in her playful nature and athletic spirit.
Living close to a picturesque lake had its perks, allowing for frequent walks and exercise sessions. Bessie loved these outings so much that it seemed she never wanted to leave.
But soon, there was a noticeable change. Bessie began to lag behind when it was time to head back home. The couple was concerned; was Bessie getting too tired, or could she be dealing with a heart issue?

“During her second year with us she was dragging her feet up the hill to the car after an hour of retrieving sticks in the water, and after a few days of her doing this, we thought maybe we were overdoing this exercise with her and she may have a bad heart,” Gene Jaworowski shared with Newsweek.
Aware that heart conditions can arise at any time in dogs, Susan and Gene were understandably anxious, so they took Bessie to the vet. As tests were conducted, fears loomed overhead; was their time with Bessie coming to an end?
However, the vet’s results were a pleasant surprise. Bessie was perfectly healthy.
So, why was she sluggish when it was time to leave the lake? The answer was quite simple: Bessie just didn’t want to go home yet. Her lack of energy was a form of protest against leaving her beloved spot by the water.
Oh, Bessie, if only you could have told them you wanted to stay a little longer. Now, about those unnecessary vet expenses—who’s going to cover that $150 bill?
