While many pet owners shower their animals with love and attention, sadly, not all pets are as lucky. Some unfortunate animals face neglect and cruelty at the hands of their owners, highlighting that not everyone is suited to care for animals.
Chunk, a beautiful three-month-old puppy, was one such victim of neglect. From birth, her owner mistreated her and, after three months, abandoned her by the roadside, tied to a tree so she couldn’t escape. Left alone and exposed to the rain, Chunk was frightened and unsure of what she had done to deserve such treatment. Luckily, a nearby fire crew stumbled upon her by accident while responding to another emergency. On a brisk October day, a police officer in Sacramento stepped in to rescue Chunk just in time.
The firefighting team noticed the small, shivering pup on their way back from handling the critical situation they had initially been called to. Moved by her plight, firefighter Mike Thawley decided to bring Chunk to the fire station. There, she was given the care and comfort she desperately needed, including a warm bath and plenty of cuddles from the crew.
Chunk wasn’t just suffering from cold exposure; she was also dealing with a severe case of mange—an ailment often seen in neglected dogs. After initial treatment at the fire station, Chunk was transferred to the Front Street Animal Shelter for further care and to begin her search for a permanent home.
The shelter provided essential treatment for her mange, and Chunk was placed in a foster home to aid her recovery. Though her fur growth was slow, her progress was being closely monitored. During this time, there was one person who couldn’t get Chunk out of his mind: firefighter Mike Thawley. He returned to visit her at the shelter and brought his wife and three daughters along for a special reason—they were there to bring Chunk into their family for good.
The Sacramento Fire Department shared their affection for Chunk on Facebook, writing, “We all just sort of fell in love with her.” Despite Mike’s initial hesitations, it was clear that Chunk would soon join the Thawley family as a permanent member. After several months of medical care, Mike and his family finally welcomed Chunk home, overjoyed to make her a permanent part of their lives.
Bobby Mann, a staff member at the shelter, remarked, “I think what’s amazing about this whole story is that not only did this dog get its forever home, but got the chance to go to a foster family, which we’re constantly searching for at our shelter, to grow happy and healthy.”
