During a stroll in Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Park, animal enthusiasts Terry Sparrow and Krista Brisk stumbled upon a distressing sight. While discarding his gum, Sparrow noticed something stirring inside a trash can. Initially, he thought it might be a squirrel or a raccoon. Upon closer inspection, however, he discovered a fluffy brown dog buried under the trash.
“It’s heartbreaking, and I’m glad we were there at the right time,” Sparrow commented to North Shore News. “I’m still in shock. Who would throw a beautiful dog like that in a trash can?”
Brisk and Sparrow quickly rescued the dog from the trash and sought assistance. The following morning, they reached out to local dog rescuer Laurie Schildt, who agreed to foster the dog and manage his care.
“I was heartbroken and angry,” Schildt shared with The Dodo. “I knew I had to do everything in my power to help him.”
Veterinarians at Canada West Veterinary Specialists examined the dog and discovered several injuries, including broken ribs, a broken leg, and a dislocated hip. Despite the challenges, the determined pup was expected to recover, though it would require multiple surgeries and a lengthy healing process. Schildt was committed to supporting him throughout his journey, naming him Oscar, inspired by Oscar the Grouch, as a playful nod to his history.
“Soon after visiting Oscar, I was surprised by how much progress he had already made. He’s a tough little guy,” Schildt wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
“Oscar has settled wonderfully into my home,” Schildt remarked. “He’s an incredibly loving boy and impresses me daily with his resilience, considering everything he’s been through.”
Oscar’s story resonated with many in the community and online, prompting generous donations towards his ongoing therapy and medical expenses. Schildt expressed profound gratitude to everyone who supported Oscar, especially to the team at Canada West Veterinary Specialists, who volunteered to cover part of his medical bills.
Oscar is well on his way to a happy ending. Remarkably, he won’t need to search for a forever home – he already has one.
“I have decided to adopt Oscar, ensuring his future is filled with love and happiness,” Schildt happily announced. “He will never feel pain or fear again. I’m truly in love with this little guy. He has captured my heart, and I look forward to our future together with my pack.”
