Nathalie and Donna have dedicated their lives to rescuing dogs in need, showing compassion and kindness wherever they go. On one remarkable day, their efforts led them to save not just one dog in distress but also a homeless pup named Dodie, offering her a chance at a new life.
Donna Lochmann, a seasoned rescuer with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, began her day like many others—facing the unpredictability of animal rescue with determination and care. Prepared for a rescue mission after receiving an urgent call about a dog needing medical attention, Donna was eager to help. Her colleague, Natalie Thompson, was right by her side, ready for another day of saving lives.
As they headed to their destination, Natalie caught sight of a small, brown creature on a nearby street. “I just saw something small and brown hanging out on a side street,” Donna remarked, and they both suspected it could be another dog in need. Deciding to prioritize their mission at hand, they completed the medical intervention swiftly, before returning to check on the small brown figure.
At first, locating the puppy they had seen earlier proved challenging. Natalie experienced a moment of disappointment when they couldn’t find it. However, her keen instincts soon led her to an alleyway, where she spotted a frightened and skinny dog seeking escape.
With determination, Natalie followed the pup into an abandoned, multi-story building—a daunting place to explore. Bravely ascending to the second floor, she discovered a puppy wrapped in a blanket, shivering against the cold.
Realizing she didn’t have the necessary slip lead to secure the puppy, Natalie faced a momentary setback. “I only had one slip lead with me, and it was on the dog in the Jeep,” Donna later shared with The Dodo. After retrieving the slip lead, Natalie returned to find the puppy had moved outside to an open field.
To gain its trust, she offered Vienna sausages and named the endearing pup “Dodie” because of her doll-like face. Once Dodie felt secure, she was easy to coax into a leash and led back to the Jeep, ready to begin her journey to safety.
Dodie was taken to a veterinarian, where, despite being underweight, her overall health was found to be in good condition. She was placed on a careful feeding plan, ensuring she received small meals multiple times a day.
Now residing in a foster home, Dodie enjoys the warmth of a cozy blanket and the loving care of her foster mom, Nicolina, alongside dedicated volunteers. This newfound comfort marks a hopeful chapter in Dodie’s life, all thanks to the unwavering compassion of Nathalie, Donna, and their team.
