In Arizona, a group of children discovered a tiny kitten while playing outside their apartment building. They initially might have thought about playing with the furry creature, but soon realized that something was wrong.
The kitten, named Cupcake, seemed unable to engage in their games, prompting the children to take appropriate action.
Understanding that Cupcake needed help, the children brought her to their parents, who then contacted Kathy Hamel, the director of Arizona Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue.
Upon arriving, Kathy noticed that the kitten’s hind legs seemed to be wrapped in make-shift casts. Concerned for Cupcake’s welfare, Kathy decided a visit to the vet was necessary to properly assess the situation.
Among the group of children, a girl aged 3 or 4 had grown particularly fond of Cupcake. She accompanied Kathy and made sure the kitten’s name would stay the same.
While it was heartening to see the children showing compassion toward the kitten, it’s a reminder of the positive impact kindness can have. At the veterinary clinic, the casts on Cupcake’s legs had to be soaked in water to be carefully removed.
Though initially expecting the worst given the casts were made from wooden splints and cloth, the vet was surprised by how effective they had been. Some required extended soaking due to the tight wrapping around her paw.
Kathy shared her initial impressions, noting, “Aside from the peculiar contraptions she was dragging around, Cupcake was incredibly tiny!
Much smaller than she appeared in the photo.” The origins of Cupcake’s homemade casts and how she ended up outside remain unclear. Nonetheless, she quickly adapted to her new human friends.
Hamel remarked on Cupcake’s resilience, saying, “She’s a tough little girl with a wonderful spirit.
Throughout the process of being handled, washed, and examined, she remained patient and friendly, purring and seeking human attention without any signs of holding a grudge.”
At the time of removing her casts, Cupcake weighed barely a pound, indicating she needed to gain weight before moving to a permanent home. Fortunately, a foster family is already prepared to care for Cupcake as she continues to recover and grow.
With each day, Cupcake is becoming healthier and more energetic. Kathy noted, “She nudges your finger to encourage head scratches.
She adores being petted, but due to her small size, only a couple of fingers can provide the affection she enjoys, rather than a whole hand.”
Cupcake’s story is one of resilience and hope, underscoring the crucial role compassion plays in healing and recovery.
