When the rescuers found HV-Scotch, a brown pitbull, he was stuck in the dark confines of his abandoned home at the end of a cobblestone lane, surrounded by other deserted houses. Despite the pitch-black night, they spotted him with their flashlights. As rescuer Donna approached, Scotch retreated into a corner, letting out a low growl of fear. To win his trust, she tossed him a piece of sausage. At the sight of food, Scotch stopped growling and lifted himself forward using only his front legs.
It was at this moment that Donna realized Scotch was unable to use his hind legs—he was paralyzed. “He was so hungry he lunged for every bit of food I threw his way,” Donna shared on the Wayward Rescue website based in St. Louis. She recounted their concerns about how long the poor dog had been abandoned and scared in the lonely house. They agreed that coaxing him with food was the safest and least stressful method to get him out.
Gradually, Scotch hauled himself towards the food, ravenous yet wary. As Donna got closer to the entrance of his shelter, she noted how he hesitated, seemingly contemplating whether to trust her. “He glanced at us as if to gauge our intentions before deciding to take a chance,” she said.
Once Scotch emerged, Donna saw the full extent of his suffering. He was painfully thin, with open sores on his hind legs caused by dragging himself across the dirt. With gentle care, the rescuers placed him on a blanket and moved him into their air-conditioned car. Throughout the journey, Scotch gazed at them, appearing to understand their intentions and expressing his gratitude for their aid.
“His eyes showed that he knew we just wanted to help,” Donna explained.
While witnessing Scotch’s state was heartbreaking, his spirit and determination were truly inspiring. The hope is that with the right care, Scotch will recover fully. The rescuers are committed to ensuring he has a loving and happy future.
