Thor, an adorable 8-week-old Chihuahua, is everything you would expect from a young puppy: inquisitive, fond of mealtime, and a big fan of snuggling and playtime with his new foster sister. Just a week ago, however, his life was drastically different.
In Dickinson, Texas, animal control officers responded to a report about a suspicious waste bag found by the roadside. To their astonishment, a small, 3-pound Chihuahua was inside the bag, looking up at them.
Covered in fleas and blood, Thor was shivering from the cold. His collar indicated he once had an owner, but the condition in which he was found suggested he had been abandoned. His right eye was severely injured and protruding from its socket.

Quickly recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the officers took Thor to Animal Kingdom Pet Hospital. There, the veterinary team worked promptly to stabilize him, although it became clear that his injured eye needed to be removed.
Kristin Smith, a veterinary technician, recounted to The Dodo the uncertainty surrounding Thor’s surgery: “We had no idea if he would survive the surgery to remove his eye. Luckily, he pulled through, and everything went better than expected.”
At only 8 weeks old, Thor was rescued just in time. Smith emphasized that another night alone in the sack could have been fatal for him.

During Thor’s recovery, Smith found herself enchanted by his charm and decided to bring him home to foster him. This decision also helped Bayou Animal Services, a local shelter dealing with numerous pet surrenders over the holiday season.
It became evident that Thor was starved for affection. He constantly seeks out Smith, eager for any opportunity to snuggle.
With cozy blankets keeping him warm, cuddling quickly became his favorite pastime. “He’s very affectionate and likes nothing more than cuddling,” Smith shared. “He’s such a sweet, tiny baby, and everyone who meets him falls in love with him.”

Despite his early hardships, Thor is recovering well. He is receiving treatment for several parasites and adjusting to life with one eye, which doesn’t seem to trouble him much.
As he continues to grow, his stitches will be removed, and he’ll receive the necessary puppy vaccines.

Smith is hopeful that Thor will be ready to find a forever home shortly after the New Year. Until then, Thor remains close to his foster mom and surrounded by his favorite blankets.
“Thor is sleeping soundly tonight with not a care in the world. He really is the perfect little puppy,” Smith said lovingly.
