This heartwarming tale follows Lily and Atlas, two sibling puppies who faced the harsh realities of street life from the very beginning.
A rescue team found them and ensured they received the necessary care and affection.
On July 6th, 2023, Lily and Atlas were discovered in St. Louis, Missouri, in poor health. Stray Rescue of St. Louis brought them to safety, noting their frail appearance and flea infestations.
The two puppies had depended solely on each other, forming a strong bond during their time on the streets. After a desperately needed bath, they were placed together in a kennel, finding comfort in their closeness. Despite their weak condition, their connection gave them the strength to endure.
A thorough examination revealed that both pups were malnourished and suffering from severe flea bites. Atlas, in particular, was found to be anemic due to blood loss.
The shelter staff shared on Instagram, “But when we look in his eyes, we can see for miles. There is so much depth, so much soul. His sister is very worried and knows something is wrong. Dogs, even babies, are incredibly intelligent.”
Atlas underwent a blood transfusion at a clinic and, thankfully, the following day brought encouraging news. He had pulled through and was able to eat on his own.
“We fell in love with him immediately and we were so worried we would lose him… these are the moments that reset and re-energize us!” shared the staff.
Atlas returned to the shelter filled with joy to reunite with his beloved sister and greet the staff who had cared for him.
“Atlas is getting LOTS of kisses from Dr. Shulz, our amazing technician Sarah, and our clinic intern Clara! This is one special puppy. His sister was excited to see him, too. They started cuddling immediately!” the shelter noted.
The staff surrounded the puppies with love, and Lily expressed her gratitude by showering Atlas’ caregivers with kisses.
In time, both pups regained their health and vigor. The shelter announced that they were ready to transition to foster care.
