On Sunday, September 14, the Emmy Awards took a poignant turn as country music icons Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson joined forces to honor the television industry’s recent losses. During the show’s annual In Memoriam segment, they performed a heartfelt version of Gill’s legendary song “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” providing a moment of reflection amid the usual glitz and glamour.

Gill’s guitar skillfully set the tone as he and Wilson alternated verses, their harmonies imbuing the piece with both depth and tenderness. Although written almost 30 years ago, the song’s themes of mourning and remembrance took on new meaning as a tribute to those the television world has lost this year.

The performance paid homage to many cherished figures, including Ozzy Osbourne, Maggie Smith, David Lynch, Valerie Mahaffey, Julian McMahon, John Amos, Loni Anderson, Michelle Trachtenberg, George Wendt, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. As their images graced the screen, the performance became a powerful highlight of the evening, serving as a heartfelt acknowledgment of their influential contributions to television.

Released in 1995, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” is a celebrated piece in country music, with Gill receiving two Grammy Awards for it. The song, which he began after his friend Keith Whitley’s death in 1989 and completed after losing his brother Bob in 1993, has become synonymous with memorial ceremonies.

Notably, Gill and Wilson’s Emmy performance introduced a third verse — a part of the song that was never recorded in its original release. First performed live in 2019, this verse has just been included in a newly extended version of the song, enhancing the Emmy tribute with layers of historical and emotional depth.
