Sarath Mounh shared with the Daily Mail that Maddox stood out because he had a bright and optimistic demeanor. He smiled and stood up when Angelina Jolie entered the orphanage while other children cried.

This charming behavior immediately captured Angelina’s heart, prompting her to start the adoption process. Despite the clear connection between Angelina and Maddox, the adoption process was far from straightforward.

At that time, Cambodia was dealing with severe cross-border child trafficking issues, complicating the legalities around adoption.

As a friend and colleague, I registered Maddox as my adopted child, then legally transferred the adoption to Angelina Jolie.”
