When Brenda, a devoted animal rescuer, learned about a dog sleeping alone on a worn-out mattress in the woods, she felt compelled to help.
The dog, named Hondo, appeared nervous and frightened as Brenda approached him gently, trying to assure him that she meant no harm. To her surprise, Hondo seemed to understand and followed her, eventually hopping into her truck.
Arriving at a shelter in Oregon, Brenda shared with The Dodo that Hondo was in dire condition. “He definitely looked like he was in a lot of pain. His skin was obviously painful. He was completely bald,” she explained.
Though initially scared, Hondo began to relax as he received the necessary treatment. The shelter staff provided immediate care for his severe case of mange, allowing his true, playful nature to emerge.
Despite being at the shelter for over a month, no one showed interest in adopting Hondo. Understanding that he needed a loving home, the shelter reached out to the South Coast Humane Society (SCHS) in Oregon for help.
SCHS quickly found Hondo a foster home with Sarah and her son, Seth, who warmly welcomed him. Upon seeing Hondo’s condition, Sarah empathized, saying, “I felt horrible when I saw Hondo because you don’t look like that overnight. That’s years of neglect.”
Seth and Hondo developed a strong bond, enjoying playtime, cuddles, and regular soothing baths to treat his mange. Acknowledging that Hondo needed a home with minimal exercise demands and no dominant dogs, Sarah ensured he was well cared for.
Thankfully, a kind family recognized Hondo’s sweet nature and decided to adopt him, offering him a permanent, loving home. Now, Hondo is finally where he belongs, relishing all the affection and care he deserves.
